A green card allows someone to be a permanent resident in the United States. It does have to be renewed periodically, but it allows them to stay without worrying about being deported or having their visa expire. For instance, many people will initially come to the United States on a work visa or an educational visa and then get a green card as they establish a new life here.

One of the reasons that people can use when they apply for a green card is if they got married. The government does put preference on offering green cards to married individuals so that the relationships can stay together. But you may have to go through a green card marriage interview.

Why do they carry out the interview?

The point of the interview is to ensure that the marriage isn’t fraudulent. The problem is that some people will try to pretend they are married just so that the person who isn’t a citizen can get a green card. The government considers this fraud and wants to reserve these green cards for those who are legitimate romantic relationships.

As such, the green card marriage interview is less about providing the right answers and more about showing that you and your spouse are in a legitimate relationship. The interviewer may just ask you about your daily habits, your relationship history, your plans for the future and things of this nature. They want to see that you and your spouse give similar answers so that it’s clear that the two of you are married because you want to be, not because you’re trying to game the system.

This can be a complex process to work your way through, with a lot at stake. Make sure you understand your legal options.
